西北大學位于美國伊利諾伊州的小鎮埃文斯通，學院建立于1851年，在成立之時學院并沒有教職員工及學生，甚至也沒有建筑物。如今西北大學已經成為一所頂尖的私立研究大學。 西北大學設有文理學院、音樂學院、梅迪爾新聞學院、邁科密克工程及應用科學院、教育學院、社會學院以及繼續教育學院。學院最熱門的專業為新聞，梅迪爾新聞學院是公認的全美最好的新聞學院之一，可與哥倫比亞大學的新聞學院相媲美。 西北大學具備完善的設備與高水平的師資，不僅吸引了無數的美國學生，更有來自世界80多個國家的國際留學生。西北大學可授予本科學士學位、碩士學位和博士學位，專業設置廣泛，開設的主要專業有：人類學、應用數學與科學、藝術、生物科學、商業、化學、電腦工程、電腦信息系統、舞蹈、表演、經濟學、工程學、音樂等等。西北大學同時開設有語言中心和網絡課程，以方便廣大學生的自主化學習。
